Obituary of Betty Ogle Branscome

Betty Ogle Branscome, who loved to be called “Darlin” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2023. She was born on December 8th, 1932, in Wythe County. In 1951, Betty married her husband, Ivan Clayton Branscome, and they were blessed to have spent over 70 years together. While Clayton served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, he and Betty traveled the country with their two young daughters, Brenda and Teresa, before making their home on the family farm in Max Meadows. After Betty and Clayton settled into their home, she was proud to have spent her career working for Wythe County Public Schools. She served in many different positions around the county but especially loved working as the secretary at Spiller Primary School for several years. She had many beautiful memories of the family and staff from working there, and she loved being able to help everyone in the building. After she retired from Wythe County Public School in 1998, she was excited to spend her time supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in any way that she could. When Betty was not with her family, she was busy volunteering or attending Austinville Baptist Church, where she served in several different positions and enjoyed studying the Bible and growing in her faith. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed making food for her family and the community whenever possible. Betty will never be forgotten by those who knew her well. Her family finds comfort in knowing that she was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Clayton Branscome, and they are now together again. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, Callie Hubbard Ogle and Frank Leonard Ogle, and her son-in-law Edwin Saufley. Betty was a loving and dedicated mother to her two daughters, Brenda Saufley and Teresa Aker, and her husband, David. She will be missed by her sister, Jane McGrady; her three grandchildren: grandson Cory Aker and his wife, Megan; granddaughter Lindsey Saufley Litchfield and her husband David; and her granddaughter Lisa Aker. She was an exceptional great-grandmother to her three great-grandchildren, Kayla and Eddie Litchfield, and Austin Aker. In addition, Betty also had many nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors at Austinville Baptist Church on Wednesday, September 6th, from 10:00-11:00 am, with the funeral to follow at 11:00 am. A graveside service will be at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Austinville Baptist Church General Fund, 127 Newtown Church Road, Austinville, VA 24312.
