Obituary of Wm. Orville Porter
Wm. Orville Porter, born January 30, 1934, of Wytheville, passed away Monday, January 30, 2017. He was the son of the late John W. & Margie Frye Porter. He graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1952, served in the U.S. Navy, played one year of minor league Baseball for St. Louis Browns, and played locally for the Southwestern Virginia Baseball League. He was a sponsor for the Wytheville Softball League, a member of Fairview UMC, and was a longtime owner of Porter Construction, building houses throughout Wythe and Bland Counties. After he retired he was an avid gardener and Yankee Fan. Orville was preceded in death by his brothers, Ranny Porter, June Porter, Franklin Porter; sisters, Helen Porter Aker, Mary George Ashford; brothers-in-law, Rass Aker, Frank Ashford. He is survived by his: wife of 58 years, Linda Akers Porter of Wytheville; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah “Debbie” Porter Smith & Andy of Peterstown, WV, Cindy Porter Davis & Bob of Moneta, VA, Teresa Gail Porter of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Mickey & Holly Porter of Wytheville; grandchildren and spouses, Virginia Smith Arnold, Will & Elizabeth Smith, Emily Ann Porter; great grandchildren, Ryleigh Ann, Brooklin Joelle, Ingrid Esme; sister-in-law, Leona Porter of Wytheville; nieces and spouses, Kay & Bobby Porterfield; Tammy & Robert Lawson, Jackie & Steve Johnson,Trish Ashford Voreh, Debbie & Freddy Kitts; nephews and spouse, Gary Ashford, Randy Dale & Sherri Porter
Funeral service will be held at 2 PM Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Fairview United Methodist Church, conducted by The Reverend Ted Anders and The Reverend Aubrey Whitlow with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, February 2, 2017 from 6 PM until 8 PM.
