Obituary of Theodore Roosevelt Turner, Jr.
Theodore “Ted” Roosevelt Turner, Jr. age 95, went to be with our mother and grandmother on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Heaven is rejoicing and is a sweeter place.
He was born in Wythe County on August 30, 1928 to the late Theodore Roosevelt Turner, Sr. and Bertha Jones Turner.
He was married to the late Elizabeth Arnold Turner and they worked together to raise nine children.
Ted worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and was so gifted with his mechanical knowledge. He retired from the Town of Wytheville Maintenance Shop 30 years ago. He spent many years working for Pendleton Construction Company as well as the Ford and Chevrolet Dealerships in Wytheville. After retirement he owned and operated Turner Small Engine Repair, repairing lawnmowers. He loved being in his workshops and worked out there from a Wheelchair and on a Walker as recently as last summer.
Preceded in death by his parents, wife, all siblings, two sons, Danny and Lou Turner and grandson Daniel Waller.
He attended Mt Zion Community Church in Piney and taught his own Sunday School Class until all his members were elderly and weren’t able to attend any longer. He held many positions in the church through the years.
Survivors include sons, Larry “Bull” Turner of Fort Chiswell; Ted Turner, III and Donna of Fort Chiswell; Randy Turner and Kathy of Ivanhoe; Jamie Turner and Cyndi of Fort Chiswell; daughters, Martha Sawyers of Fort Chiswell; Deborah Woodyard and Jim of Piney; Lynn Sonner and Jimmy of Piney; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great- great-grandchildren; special caregiver, Jo Clyburn.
Funeral service will be held 5 P.M. Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at the Mt. Zion Community Church with Pastor Joe Carrico officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 P.M. on Wednesday at the church.
