Obituary of Sandra (Sandy) Fitzgerald Tarter
Sandra (Sandy) Fitzgerald Tarter was born on November 16, 1938, to Benjamin Pryor and Ina Rodeffer Fitzgerald in Roanoke, Virginia. She was married to her beloved C.D. until his death in 2016. She died June 27, 2024, at her home in Wytheville, Virginia. She is survived by her daughters Katherine Tarter of Wytheville, Virginia and Jennifer Tarter, of Ceres, Virginia, her grandchild Candice Bush and Candice’s husband Clay and two great grandchildren, Charles Whitson Bush and Anderson Fitzgerald Bush of Wythe County, Virginia; her sister Belle and brother-in-law Jack Neighbors of Wytheville, Virginia, her niece Sarah Keeble and her husband Sam of Richmond, Virginia; Her sister-in-law, Marsha Peters and niece Erin Arthur of Roanoke, Virginia and many cousins and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Sandy taught school for many years in both the Wythe County and Bland County Public School systems. She was the former Director of Recreation for Wythe County and in her later years could be found at estate sales and buying and selling antiques. She was active in many sports, particularly golf where she was the past president of the Women’s Division of the Virginia State Golf Association, she played and coached tennis and participated in many of the local recreational leagues well into her 50s. She learned to snow ski in her 60s and rooted tirelessly for her Virginia Cavaliers. Additionally, Sandy liked to paint, take photographs and write music, with several of her paintings and photographs receiving local
awards.
The family will be receiving friends at Grubb Funeral Home on July 9 from 5 to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia and/or the Wythe-Bland Animal Welfare League. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.grubbfuneralhome.com
