Obituary of Rosemary McCall Schoenthal
Rosemary McCall Schoenthal, 81, of Bland, Virginia, passed away at home on Friday, January 10, 2025. She was born on March 1, 1943, in Dahlgren, Virginia, to Marshall Grant McCall and Emma Quesenberry Payne McCall.
Rosemary is survived by her loving husband, Gerhard Schoenthal of Bland; her sons, Gerhard Siegbert Schoenthal (Rebecca Schoenthal), of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Marshall Wilhelm Schoenthal (Libby Schroeder), of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the proud grandmother of five cherished grandchildren: Rath, Otto, and Philippa Schoenthal of Charlottesville, and Grant and Charlotte Schoenthal of Milwaukee.
Rosemary led a full and varied life, working as a teacher, county election official, real estate broker, and devoted farmer’s wife. She took great pride in her large and extended family, the successes of her two sons, and found immense joy in her grandchildren over the last 18 years.
A long-standing member of the Moribana Garden Club, Rosemary was passionate about gardening, tending each season to expansive plots of both flowers and vegetables. Her domain was the house and her gardens, while Gerhard tended cattle on the land, they both cherish so greatly. She was also deeply invested in the community at St. John’s Episcopal church in Wytheville where she served on the altar guild for many years. She was a phenomenal chef and loved to host friends and family in her warm, welcoming home. A generous caregiver to her mother and to many others over the years, Rosemary will be remembered for her love, hospitality, and the community of friends that she fostered.
Rosemary will be laid to rest at her family’s burial site in Dahlgren, Virginia. A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm on Thursday, January 16 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wytheville.
