Obituary of Marie Gilliland Flanagan
Marie Gilliland Flanagan, age 91, of Wytheville passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James H. Flanagan, and her parents, John Morris & Truda Spangles Gilliand Whitcomb. She was an active member of Wytheville Presbyterian Church where she served as church treasurer, Circle chairman, member of the Worship Committee, sang in the Chancel choir, and served on the flowers & Hospitality committee.
She got her Associate degree in business at Radford University and went to work in the Law Office of Ted Dalton in Radford, where she met and married Jim Flanagan. They moved to his farm in Wythe County in 1950 where they lived until 1970. She went to work in the Wythe County Clerk’s Office for the late James Crockett. When he retired in 1975, she was the first woman in Wythe County to run for and be elected to constitutional office, where she served until 1983. She also served a two year term as chairman of the Republican Party. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Lee Flanagan of Cary, NC; son, James H. Flanagan, Jr. of Kingsport, TN; sister, Mille Turman of Summerville, SC.
A memorial service will be held 11 AM, Thursday May 18, 2017 at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church conducted by The Reverend Brad Simpson. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Hospice of Southwest Va. 600 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, Va. 24382 or to the Wytheville Presbyterian Church, 285 S Church St., Wytheville, Va. 24382.
