Wanda and Nancy, I am very sorry to hear of your father passing; please know he is with your mother and they are very happy. I know you will miss him but take comfort in the love of God for him and both of you. I always heard good things about your dad and his skill with horses. He was one of the best; he had a second nature for them and knew them well. May God bless you and comfort you in the days ahead. Love to you both, Joyce Scott Davis

This is Thad on "Captain" in 2003 at ASHAV. He would have been 82, I believe, and on a very game, beautiful, Open 5-Gaited American Saddlebred; and as far as I know, this was the last time he ever showed a 5-gaited horse. I wonder if he is the oldest person to show an open horse at ASHAV. I was lucky enough to be able to ride this gorgeous horse several times.

Uncle Shorty was a great man and will be sadly missed. As with all of us, I remember skating on the pond in the infield in the winter when we were kids, and he would always walk out on the pond first to check the ice. He gave me my first show horse and is the reason I am in the horse business now. My deepest condolences to the family who lived with and saw him daily. I know his passing left a void. We might have called him UNCLE SHORTY but he made a large than life impact on everyone he met, and the world is a lesser place with his passing. However, I know the horses that went before are waiting for him in that big ole show barn in Heaven, and all his family and friends are waiting to celebrate with him.

I am saddened to hear of this loss. Thad was a light that shined for so many, and his genuine, sweet soul was a blessing to all those he met. I am honored to have written his story. The opportunity I had to spend time with him is something I have always cherished, and I will never forget trotting with him and sitting down to lunch to talk horses. I hope he knew how important he was to me, and so many others in his life.

We have known Thad for many years, watched him show, talked with him many times. He was always the finest gentleman. We admired him, respected him, and always knew he was the “go to” person for advice! Many years ago we watched the five gaited class at the old Statesville horseshow & Thad & 2 other trainers were called back out on the rail for a workout.....all three were top trainers and what a workout it was!!! I still get goosebumps remembering that night. When they lined up all 3 trainers were leaning over & shaking hands with each other....and when the winner was called it was Thads horse...

Dear Family & Friends of Thad:
Thad was one of the kindest, most honorable & finest men I have ever had the honor of knowing.
I first met Thad in 1969 at the WV State Championship Horse Show at Camden Park in Huntington, WV. I was just learning about the American Saddlebred as I had been riding jumpers until that time.
Enter "Super Command", a son of the immortal "Wing Commander". There are no words to describe my infatuation with "Super Comnand" & the unforgettable presence that horse & Thad imprinted in my mind.
Being only 14 years old at the time, a lesser man would have become annoyed & aggravated over my constant questions. Then, imagine my shock when Thad scooped me up & put me in the jog cart next to him! Off we went... jogging "Supe" all over the show grounds with Thad turning the lines (reins) over to me. I felt like a queen ... like a young lady who was actually jogging "Super Command"! That feeling... that power... that pride! I could write volumes about that week, but will close by saying, "thank you, Thad. And, though you and I talked about that many times, to me, it was surely the week that was!"
R.I.P. Mr. Williams and God Speed.

I have missed seeing Thad at the KY shows over the last few years. I have so many good memories of road trips with him and Sid Shaver, going to horse show or just to visit other trainers, when I lived in Blacksburg. He was a great horseman and a gentleman.

Thad was a true Southern gentleman, and a great horseman. He was so kind to me at shows, always tipped his hat, gave me a hug, and freely gave help and advice to an amateur rider just starting out showing American Saddlebreds. I'm going to miss Mr. Thad. Rack on all over Heaven, yeah boy❤️

I have always admired Thad. I even had a crush on him when I was little. He was always so nice to me, a nobody in the horse world. He greeted me with a smile every time I saw him and never acted perturbed when I would drop by the farm unannounced. He was a true Southern gentleman. I enjoyed watching him show because he could ride the hair off a horse and make it look easy. He will be missed.
