Obituary of Nancy Hurt Umberger

Nancy Hurt Umberger passed Thursday, May 31 at her home at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia.  A 12:00 Visitation followed by a 2:00 Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, June 6 at Wytheville Presbyterian Church in Wytheville, Virginia.  As requested by Nancy, a Celebration complete with grilled hamburgers and crispy French fries, music and dancing will be planned.  The last song played will be “On The Road Again” by Willie Nelson. 

Nancy Hurt was born in Wytheville December 20, 1942 to Jeanette Gordon Hurt and Jacob Schaffer Hurt, and was raised with her younger brother Jim.  Nancy was proud to have graduated in 1960 with the largest class to graduate from George Wythe High School with her sweetheart Marion Kent Umberger.  Nancy and Kent were married June 19, 1965 and raised two daughters, Meredith and Alison, in Greensboro, NC.  Nancy was most proud of her profession as a junior high and high school physical science, chemistry and physics teacher.  It was a sad day for students when she eventually retired.  Nancy and Kent moved to Smith Mountain Lake, VA in 2003 where they loved having guests.  Nancy was particularly fond of playing bridge with her bridge partner, and participating in many activities with AAUW.  She is survived by her husband Kent; daughter Meredith Williams of High Point, daughter Alison Locklear of Greensboro, and their husbands Burt and Allen; grandchildren Jake, Jesse, Regan, Reilly, Jordan and Ashley; and niece Jeanette Gurr of Atlanta.  She was preceded in death by her parents and brother. 

In lieu of flowers, feel free to make donations to the Smith Mountain Association of University Women, P.O. Box 632, Hardy, VA, 24101.  These monies will be used to promote the endeavors of local girls and women in Franklin, Bedford, and Pittsylvania counties in Virginia.
