Obituary of Charles E. Cummings, Sr.

Charles “Chuck” Cummings passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 27, 2018. Chuck was born on May 20, 1929 in Elmira, NY to Leo and Louise Cummings. Chuck was preceded in death by a son, Timothy John.

Chuck graduated from State University of New York at Delhi with a degree in building construction. He later joined the Army and served with the 2nd Infantry in Korea. After his return, he married Dottie and together they raised 7 almost perfect children! Chuck went into business with his father in the home- building industry, and designed many of the homes they built. He was very proud to have built the Cummings family first home.

Other career opportunities took Chuck and his family to Camillus, NY, a suburb of Syracuse, where he worked in sales of construction materials. Chuck also devoted his time to coaching Little League baseball, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and bird watching.

Chuck and Dottie later moved to Virginia and eventually settled in Wytheville in 1991. In addition to his wood working and gardening, Chuck worked part-time at Acme and Food Lion grocery stores, and most happily as a Host at Cracker Barrel. Chuck absolutely loved work that centered around greeting and helping people, and after more than a decade at Cracker Barrel, he hung up his apron.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Dottie, his children Kathie (Mehdi) Marvasti of Jamesville, NY, Ched (Debbie) Cummings of Syracuse, NY, Don (Teresa) Cummings of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Colleen Cummings of Wytheville, VA, Jim Cummings of Summerville, SC and Eileen Hicks of Powhatan, VA. Chuck is also survived by his sister, Gayle (Richard) Martin of Jacksonville, AL, and ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville on Thursday, July 5th from 6:00-8:00pm with prayer service at 7:30pm. Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wytheville on Friday, July 6th at 11:00am. Inurnment to take place at a later date in Elmira, NY. We would like to thank all the staff of Carrington Place in Rural Retreat for their incredible kindness and care of Chuck for the three years he was a resident.
