Obituary of Harry Douglas Akers
Harry Douglas Akers, of Wytheville, Virginia, departed this life on September 20, 2018 at age 89. He was born in Pulaski, Virginia on October 11, 1928. He shared his life, “another day in paradise” on this earth with wife Jettie Akers for 65 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; Harry Ellis Akers and Edith Leonard Akers, two sisters; Nedra Owens and Mary Salyer also one nephew Steve Hughes. He is survived by one sister; Nina Akers Hughes; four nieces; Martha Damron; Sue Flowers; Judith Hughes; Reggie Crumpler and one nephew Billy Salyer. He had many special friends; golfing buddies and church members that were family to him as well. Harry was a very honorable man always showing his kindness toward others whether family, friends or strangers.
He graduated from Pulaski High School Class of 1946. He attended VPI (now known as Virginia Tech); served in the United States Navy; Master Electrician with I.B.E.W. #637 of Roanoke; former, Electrical Maintenance Supervisor at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Harry was a very active member for many years at St. John’s Episcopal Church where he served as Trustee, member of the Vestry and was Treasurer. He was a member of MENSA; member of Masonic Lodge No. 82; Wytheville Golf Club and Odd Fellows Lodge.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the St. John’s Episcopal Church located at 275 East Main Street, Wytheville, Virginia with, The Rev. T. Birch Rambo officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Church Columbarium. Memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church Wytheville, Virginia
