My condolences go out to the family of Mr. Matheny. I first knew Mr. Matheny back when I attended Wytheville Community College from 92 to 94 taking his accounting classes. Mr. Matheny was a sincere gentleman and went out of his way to help and support his students in his classes.
He was a diehard NASCAR fan, especially of the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. I remember when he had tickets to two races that got rained out on Sunday and were rescheduled for the next day but he was back at the college teaching his 8 am accounting class because while he loved NASCAR, his students and dedication to teaching were more important.
He had gone through many difficult times with the passing of his loving wife, Betty, and son, Johnathan along with dealing with health issues but he always was the pillar of strength for his family and the many friends he obtained throughout his life.
It was my privilege to have known Mr. Matheny and appreciate his life lessons he passed on to me and others.
