Obituary of Harry E. Angstadt

Harry E. Angstadt, 86, of Wytheville VA passed away on February 20, 2023 at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem VA. He was born in Laureldale PA to the late Harvey E. Angstadt and Ruth E. Angstadt. Harry graduated from Muhlenberg Township High School, Lauredale PA, in 1954. After graduation he joined the US Navy Reserve and served for 15 years as a gunner’s mate on a destroyer. In 1956 he went to work as a machine operator at The Polymer Corporation in Reading PA. He worked his way up through the ranks and in 1974 Polymer sent him to Wytheville VA to take the position of Manufacturing Superintendent at their new subsidiary Polypenco Inc. Harry left Polypenco in 1987 and started a small business with his wife Fran called Fran’s Deli. They operated the deli until their retirement in 2008. From 1990 to 1998 Harry also held the position of Plant Manager at National Seating in Wytheville. He was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for 49 years. He served in various leadership roles in the church, but his favorite role was singing tenor in the choir which he did for over 45 years. He was a member of the Wytheville Lions Club and served as President for 2 years. He also served as President of the Wytheville Band Boosters for several years. He served as an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America in both Reading PA and Wytheville and eventually earned the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award an adult can earn in the BSA. Harry was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed shooting, hunting, and fishing. He was honored to hold the position of Grand Admiral at the Snyder-Laing-Suarez School of Lateral Pier Fishing. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances A. Angstadt of Wytheville and 2 sons, Kevin L Angstadt (Lynn) of Radford VA and Christopher A. Angstadt (Sherrie) of Dallas NC. 3 Grandchildren, Christina K. Angstadt of Sugar Grove VA, Amanda L. Angstadt of Chapel Hill NC, and Hunter Q. Angstadt of Cullowhee NC and 1 Great Grandchild Kaylee Lineberry of Sugar Grove VA. He is also survived by 1 Brother, Paul Angstadt of Reading PA and 5 sisters, Elaine Evans of Hamburg PA, Susan Brommer of Reading PA, Judith Moyer of Fleetwood PA, Mary Sallada of Reading PA and Diane Choiniere of Laureldale PA. He is Preceded in death by 2 brothers, William D Angstadt of New Schaefferstown PA and James A Angstadt of West Lawn PA and 1 sister Emmalou Angstadt of Reading PA. The family would like to extent special thanks to Harry and Fran’s neighbors, the Harmons and the Carters, their good friend Terry Suarez and many members of St. Paul for looking in on and helping them over the years. A celebration of Harry’s life will be held on Saturday February 25th at 2:00PM in the sanctuary of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville with Pastor Lon Tobin officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Wesley Hall at the church.
