Obituary of Nancy Phillippi Scott

Nancy Phillippi Scott, 91, died April 29, 2023. A Wytheville native, she was a daughter of the late James Carl Phillippi Sr. and his wife Mary Sue Clippard Phillippi. Nancy was married 68 years to a fellow Wytheville native, Donald Scott. She graduated from Wytheville High School as the salutatorian in the class of 1949. Nancy attended Radford College, graduating with three Bachelor’s degrees. Later, she received a Master’s degree from VPI&SU. Nancy returned to the Wythe County school system, this time as a teacher. She taught 30 years in the county schools. Even after retirement, Nancy continued to tutor students. Until ill health limited her activities, Nancy played the piano and organ in church and also sang in several choirs, primarily her church choir and the Wytheville Community choir. Throughout her life, she was active in several musical, civic, and professional organizations. She volunteered in the town’s museums and library systems. Nancy was also an active member of her church for many years. Nancy is preceded in death by her 4 sisters, 1 brother, and by her son Thomas Michael Scott. She is survived by her husband, daughter Teresa and son-in-law Stan, 2 grandchildren and their spouses, and 1 great-grandchild. A memorial service will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Wytheville Presbyterian Church in Nancy’s honor. The family requests no visits to the home, but cards are welcome.
