Obituary of Charles Elmer Shockley

Charles Elmer Shockley age 78 passed away at Carrington Place of Wytheville on April 10, 2017. He died of bladder cancer complications. His parents, Elmer and Edna Shockley preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandra Lee Irvin Shockley, and his Daughter, Lesley C. Shockley and Husband Alan Woodcock of Warrenton, VA. Charley graduated from George Wythe High School in 1955, where he played football. He received an Associate of Arts Degree from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1957. He received his B.S Degree from East Tennessee University in 1959 where he was Vice-President of PI Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He served six years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Charley was employed by State Farm Insurance Company for 40 years. During that time he was in Auto Claims Management for 30 years working in Winston-Salem, N.C, Greensboro, N.C. and Charlottesville, VA. He spent the last 21 years of his career in Northern Virginia where he was President of the Washington Claims Association and in 1989 he was awarded The Fred Johnson Memorial Award for his leadership abilities. His last career assignment was at the regional office in Charlottesville, VA where he was the Estimatics Section Manager for the State of Virginia. He retired on September 1, 1999. Charley and Sandra relocated to their hometown of Wytheville, Va. He truly enjoyed returning to Wytheville and never regretted the move. He was a member of The Wytheville Lions Club and was President in 2008-2009. He was a member of the Wytheville Planning Commission for 8 years and was chairman in 2012-2016. Charley was a Lifetime Endowment NRA Member. He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church and served on the Administrative Board. He was Chairman of the Board for three years and was a Lay Leader for three years. Charley loved to ski at their 2nd home in Wintergreen which he enjoyed for 15 years. He also enjoyed boating on his 25 ft. power boat on the Potomac River and his pontoon boat at Claytor Lake. Charley and Sandra loved to travel. They crossed the U.S. several times and made seven cruises. When they had the chance, they loved to stay at luxury hotels and resorts. During their marriage they were members of several country clubs where they enjoyed playing golf. Charley realized that his game wasn’t improving so he pursued other endeavors. Charley and Sandra enjoyed spending 6 weeks each year at their Myrtle Beach Partnership Condo. Charley also loved walking at the Wytheville Community Center with his friends. The rest of his time was spent working on his home and 2 acre yard. He cared very much for his wife and daughter and his two Wire Fox Terriers (Tory and Winston). He and Sandra had a full enjoyable life and loved each other very much. A memorial service will be held 4 P.M. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 330 Church St. Wytheville, VA, 24382. The family will receive friend at the church from 2 P.M. until service time, or at the home anytime. The family request no food or flowers. Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church. A marker has been placed in the family plot at West End Cemetery. His ashes will be scattered on Pine Ridge. Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
